North Canyon Pain Management

Your Pain is Our Priority

The health of our community has always been our top priority — this is why we are excited to announce that we have expanded our medical services to include Pain Management. Adding this much-needed healthcare resource is just one of many ways we can better care for the people we serve.

From breaks and sprains to post-surgery recovery and chronic pain, life can throw a lot at us that can bring discomfort. And while some pain is easily manageable, there are many conditions and situations where therapeutic and medical interventions are necessary. The North Canyon Pain Management team is equipped with the skills and knowledge to help you navigate whatever pain management situation you are facing.

Types of Pain

Pain is a broad term — to better understand pain, it helps to break it down types into identifiable categories. Two primary categories of pain are nociceptive and neuropathic pain. How your pain is treated is influenced by the kind of pain you are experiencing.

Nociceptive Pain

The most common type of pain is nociceptive pain. This kind of discomfort can range from mild to severe and is caused by receptors in the body called nociceptors being harmed. This can happen when you touch something hot, scrape a knee, experience a cut, or break a bone.

Some common injuries that result in nociceptive pain include sprains, strains, burns, bruises, fractures, and cuts.

Types of nociceptive pain include:

Radicular Pain

Radicular pain (relating to nerve roots in the spine) occurs when nerve roots are impinged or compressed. This kind of pain usually originates from the spine but can result from nerve bundles being impinged.

Somatic Pain

Somatic pain (relating to the body) is the result of pain receptors in tissues being activated. Common tissues to experience somatic pain are skin, muscles, and bone.

Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is typically triggered by diseases or injuries that damage the nervous system. This type of pain can be more challenging to address than nociceptive pain because there is often no apparent cause of pain.

Some common types of neuropathic pain include migraines, peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and components of cancer pain.

What is Pain Management?

Pain management is a branch of medicine that focuses on addressing, managing, and relieving pain. While a pain management specialist can treat all types of pain, many of the patients seeking the expertise of a physician specializing in pain management are experiencing chronic pain.

Physicians specializing in pain management have extensive education and training, including board certification in anesthesiology, physical rehabilitation, or psychiatry and neurology.

Whether you are experiencing postoperative pain, chronic migraines, or neuropathy, North Canyon Pain Management can help address your discomfort.

When Should You See a Pain Management Specialist?

It can be difficult to know when you should seek the expertise of a pain management specialist. Schedule an appointment with a pain management physician any time you experience any of the following:

  • Chronic or constant pain
  • Chronic migraines
  • Arthritis
  • Neuropathy
  • Pain with weakness in your arms or legs
  • Frequent or reoccurring pain
